A tort is any wrong recognized as a legal wrong, not arising
out of a contract, but for which a lawsuit for compensation or
damages may be brought in the courts. Perhaps the most common
tort is negligence. This is the requirement that in some situations
people have good conduct duties to other people. For example,
it is negligence if someone fails to keep sidewalks clear of
ice where it can be reasonably expected that people will use
the sidewalk and the ice makes doing so dangerous. A person is
liable in negligence for failure to clean the sidewalk.
